There has been so much talk about the Streamy Awards 2010 this year. Our experience of the awards show was magically unique because we were hidden away with one goal… to document the event with photographs.

This is our version of motion portraits for the award winners and presenters.

The Bui Brothers Exclusive Streamys Photos

A few weeks ago, Vu and I (The Bui Brothers) had a great time shooting photos of Justine Ezarik. You may know her as iJustine… if that is the case, please enjoy these photos of iJustine.

One of our goals was to give iJustine photos of herself that were unique and something out of her element. We think we accomplished that very well. Justine was so awesome putting up with us all day, she was up for anything and never ran out of energy. Thank you so much Justine!!!

Recently Vu and I were given the pleasure of shooting Felicia Day to give her updated headshots and some awesome promo images. If you don’t know who Felicia Day is, here is a bit about her taken from her website:

Felicia is most widely known for her work in web video, and co-starred in Joss Whedon’s Internet musical “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog,” Voted the Best TV of 2008 by Time Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and People Magazine just to name a few. She also can be seen in the web series “The Guild”, which she created, writes and stars in. “The Guild” was the winner of the YouTube, Yahoo and SXSW Best Web Series Awards for 2008 and for the first season alone collected over 11 million hits web-wide.

Simply put… she rocks out web video. Oh, and we can’t forget to mention that she also has been on TV in “House”, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Dollhouse” and “Monk” and in movies “Bring it on Again” and “Warm Springs”. One more thing… if you are not one of her 645,652 twitter followers (as of 10pm June 2, 2009) you can get some good joy from following her @feliciaday (follow us too – @vubui and @lanbui)

The Music

Something amazing I want everyone to take note of is the music in the video above. This music was written and composed by Paul Dateh and Ken Belcher specifically for this video. It is all original music made just for Felicia Day’s behind the scenes video. I am so glad they were able to create such an awesome soundtrack for our video, I think it is so awesome that they are able to carry the mood of the visuals with sound. It is also really cool that since the music is made for the video it is timed perfectly and follows the mood perfectly. Thanks so much Ken and Paul for the music!!!

The Makeup

Tracie Cotta is such a great makeup artist to work with! She is fun to work with… so If you have any needs for hiring a makeup artist you need to give her a call. Every time we work with Tracie we have gotten perfect results.

The Bonny

Without Bonny’s support it would be so hard to do these photo shoots. She always helps out with all of the things we don’t think of.

Lan and I were flown to Cancun by Doug and Lawrence (Furious Photographers) to shoot a photographer’s promo video of them. They somehow booked two weddings back to back in Cancun… with a Day After session after the second wedding (which actually won’t happen until tomorrow).

As part of our project we were also delivering a short video for each couple, so we were essentially shooting two videos at each wedding. For Tiffany and Ly, we decided to do a same-day edit of their AMAZING wedding incorporating photos shot by Doug and Lawrence. Their photos were great, and we got some wonderful footage. I suppose you’d call this a same-day fusion-video, using both photos and video together instead of one or the other or two separate presentations.

We’ll be doing a full edit in the coming weeks, but this is what we showed at the reception, thankfully to a oohs and aahs then a wonderful applause at the end. Tiffany and Ly were literally a dream couple to work with… not just by having a gorgeous wedding but as people who were genuine, easy going and just plain fun.

TECH: Obviously there was no time for adjustments, effects or transitions, those will come later. For those wondering, it was shot on a 5D mark II and a Canon HV20 on a Steadicam Merlin, edited in Final Cut Pro, exported and sent to iMovie to add the photos (because it’s easy!). The video was presented on a MacBook Pro to the guests and delivered to the couple on an iPod Touch. Furious Photographers don’t fool around.

Khara Plicanic of Kabloom Studios contacted us about shooting a promo video for her some time last summer, starting the conversation… of course… via Twitter DM. Remember when you had to actually pick up a phone or even drive down to their shop to hire someone for something? Anyhow… she is super cool and fun and radiates positive energy… and over a few bunches of 140 characters or less I took an instant liking to her and was extremely excited to shoot her video.

This is definitely our favorite production yet, and showcases some of the things we love about doing promotional videos. We believe in letting others speak for you, because honestly it’s easy for most people to speak highly of themselves… but getting others to come forth and give an honest testimonial about how awesome you are… well that really speaks to your effect on your clients.

I’ll let the video say the rest of what needs to be said. Khara is awesome… and hopefully our contribution to her online presence helps to show that to the world.

When is a rainy day a bad day for a shoot??? Never, that is what we learned.

I’m sure you already know who Brigitte Dale is. If you don’t… she is Yahoo! Video Best Internet Personality of the Year 2008, a triple century video blogger (only 18 more and she will be quad century) who now video blogs for ABC Family; and three words I would use to describe her are awesome, beautiful and fun. First I’ll touch on her awesomeness.

We had scheduled a full photo shoot of Brigitte two weeks in advance without even thinking of the weather. I mean… we live in southern California!!! Come on!!! Sun sun sun all day long every day. I practically never worry about weather. On the day of the shoot Vu and I realized it was raining pretty hard, and just as we started talking about it Brigitte text messaged me asking if we were shooting rain or shine. What did I say? Well, I can’t make her get sick by shooting the rain; Our first instinct was to cancel the shoot. For one, we have never done a shoot in the rain; second, neither of us can remember any photo shoots we have seen done in the rain; third, we would be jerks for making her do her shoot in the rain. But then we got to thinking… this is a truly unique chance to get some extraordinary photos. I call Brigitte back and it turned out she loves rainy beaches and is completely up for it, even after I threatened that she would get sick. Brigitte is awesome.

Next, Brigitte is beautiful. Well… I don’t need a story to prove this one. As you can see, she just is.

Lastly, but not at all the last word to describe Brigitte, she is fun. We had a non stop good time, from the time we met up through the shoot and through dinner, we never stopped joking and laughing.

So, as it turned out all the fussing over the rain was for nothing. As we drove up to the shoot it was raining harder than I have seen in months, but just as we were walking out to begin the shoot we saw perfect puffy clouds and a bit of blue sky. Finally, just as we began to shoot, we had one of the most majestic sunsets I’ve seen.

A few nights ago we shot a good friend of ours, Rudy Jahchan because he needed an updated headshot. Here is our favorite from the shoot:

Lan and I have been fans of Battlestar Galactica for quite a while… though he was into it well before me. I had thought it was a bit too geeky sounding for me… but finally he got me to agree to watch the mini-series… and I was hooked.

Anastasia and Matt do the successful shows BSGcast and Your Geek News. BSGcast basically goes into the details of each episode after it airs and discusses possible future happenings as well as interpreting some of the more difficult to understand plot elements. We think it’s great!

They were in town for their BSGcast Final Frak Party Season 4.5 Premiere in LA. We had communicated before but never met (as with many of our internet friends) so we took this opportunity to visit with each other and do a quick shoot of Anastasia right in the parking garage of the Sheraton where the screenings, party and auction were being held.

The video was shot by Aaron Dieppa as part of his daily show, The Big Picture. As usual we didn’t have a permit or permission to shoot at our location… and security came (actually they stopped by twice) and there was a… well… altercation. Curious? Watch it!

Her photos came out great, however… here are a few of our favorites… enjoy.

Vu and I have been working with Dane Sanders on a new exciting project for the last few months. If you don’t know who Dane is, he is a Wedding Photographer who is also an educational leader in his industry. You can find out about him here.

Ask Dane is a weekly video blog where Dane answers questions from his viewers. Don’t expect it to be how to use your camera, instead we are going way beyond that and getting into the logistics behind running your own business. The beauty behind this new series is that any small business owner or sole proprietor can watch and apply the questions and answers to their business.

Neha was the reason Vu and I planned a photo trip to San Francisco. She had contacted me a long time ago (after she saw Veronica Belmont’s previous shoots by us) and asked if we would ever be in the San Franciso area so we could do some photos for her. At the time we had no plans so we agreed to let each other know if/when we would be in each others’ town. Fast forward to about a month ago… Neha needed updated photos and let us know.

We got the word out that The Bui Brothers would be in San Francisco doing photoshoots and got to schedule some nice shoots.

You can watch the behind the scenes video and see a little bit of the day, we promise to make more technically satisfying videos in the future for all of you that want to know the details of how we light our photos. Then take a look at our favorite photos from the shoot.

This is the second teaser for Gabriel and Carlie’s new video suite, set to release within the next few weeks in conjunction with their new website.

This video was shot in Hawaii, and is our second example of 3D text living in a motion video world. For those of you who watch TV, you can see the same effect on the show Fringe (also on Hulu). It’s in every episode. It’s also appearing in a few movies here and there (the earliest I ever saw it was the opening sequence of the movie Panic Room).

The Boudoir Divas, Kimberlee West and Marissa Boucher, are an amazing photography duo based in San Diego who teach boudoir photography to both aspiring and experienced photographers. Lan and I met with them a few months back and we instantly connected with their vision to educate and work with other photographers. They will be offering new workshops over the coming months, notably the one in Paris, France… so we took them to Paris, Las Vegas to shoot their promo video.
