Justine Ezarik Photos - iJustine Photoshoot

A few weeks ago, Vu and I (The Bui Brothers) had a great time shooting photos of Justine Ezarik. You may know her as iJustine… if that is the case, please enjoy these photos of iJustine.

One of our goals was to give iJustine photos of herself that were unique and something out of her element. We think we accomplished that very well. Justine was so awesome putting up with us all day, she was up for anything and never ran out of energy. Thank you so much Justine!!!

Of course the photo shoot of Justine would not have been possible without the following people:

Original Music : Paul Dateh and Ken Belcher
Makeup/hair : Tracie Cotta
Wardrobe : Bonny Pierzina
Style : Doug Chan (Furious Photographers)
Location Sponsor : Lawrence Chan (Tofurious)

Awesome photographs! I LOVE the themes; finally someone has done a photoshoot of Justine that’s outside of the box.

You oughta share the video on Viddler too!

    Giddy up!

    • http://www.stevosphere.com/grayce-pages/derouin.html helen

Those b/w photos knock me out, and with the background music, recall Bette Davis and Joan Crawford photos, Sultry and in good taste.

I can see James Cagney throwing the door open as he yells, “You turned me in to da cops, I gotta run!”

She of course just whimpers, smiles with the quip, “I want to know where you are, let’s go to Mexico .” “She creams,”Now, tonight!”

“He seats himself on the sofa and hangs his head and replies, “I am tired of running, I’ve been on the lamb all my life.” He raises his eyes slowly, looking deeply into her eys, and says, “But with you, any thing is possible.” They embrace.

      Curtain Falls.
      Music fades into black.

What sort of camera did you use for the behind the scenes stuff?

We used a Canon 5D mark II for most of the footage, there is a little bit done with a Canon HF10.

The photographs are not really that imaginative. I would have thought that using such a photogenic model such as Justine, you could have got more out of her.
The lighting is good, but the sets are trashy. Using a Canon 5D mark II, anyone can take decent photographs. It is a very easy camera to use.
There was not much of a theme to the shoot, and it seemed very dis-jointed.
Sorry to be so critical but I couldn’t see anything that I really thought was “Wow”.
An Amateur could have produced similar, if not better work in a more natural enviroment. I hope Justine decides to go with a more professional photographer next time.

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Hahahaha although I probably can’t figure out WHO this is… I know a joke when I see one. :P

Still not sure which you’re going for, though, the “jealous untalented amateur who thinks his images would be beautiful if he only owned an expensive camera” OR the “daft troll who couldn’t think of anything intelligent enough to be insulting”.

Using the name Pete makes me believe you are someone somewhat close to us though because it would have to be someone who knows us to have heard our “Pete” story.

I would have been better fooled if you hadn’t gotten absolutely silly, though, with the all-too-familiar “Using a Canon 5D mark II, anyone can take decent photographs.” Now THAT was a good one! Or the Ritz Carlton “trashy” room statement. OMZ :P

      Nice try!

      Hi Pete Mahoney!

At first I thought you were someone we know and that you were joking. Now I find you are serious…

So, after searching flickr for your email address I found your flickr profile. Looks like you are an amateur photographer… I’m not sure how “An Amateur could have produced similar” because you as an amateur don’t have anything like what we have.

I’m glad we were able to make you feel the way you feel, maybe it will motivate you to take awesome photos.

Thanks for your comments, and you don’t have to hid behind internet anonymity… it doesn’t even work…

You guys did an amazing job with this photoshoot. It was very creative and it seems that you captured everything that makes Justine who she is to all of her fans. Her natural beauty in the photos of her in the moonlight overlooking the ocean, her fun and crazy side in the “Harajuku ijustine” photos, her love and dedication to the internet in the “Internet Junkie” photos, and last, but not least, her flirty sophistication in the “On The Bed With Justine” photos. Bravo. You did a fantastic job!

Oh and one more thing- I really love your choice of music in the video. Would you mind telling me the names of the songs? Thanks so much!

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Thanks so much for the comment and praise, it’s much appreciated!

The music is an original score created specifically for this video by Paul Dateh and Ken Belcher. They also did the same for our Veronica Belmont and Felicia Day videos. Having an original score really takes the videos to another level and Paul and Ken are amazingly talented.

      Glad you enjoyed it!

This is the worst example of lighting I have seen… The shadows are awful! And bad cross lighting… What is it with these “Self” proclaimed photographers giving themselves “Fake” high status via phony “Hype” via blogs and self made website? This stuff is just downright poor lighting and a example of of someone throwing lights any where and then throwing a heavy “Effects” filter on it and calling it “Cool”… Just because people can “Talk up” there image and rub noses with a few other names or get a small band of new photographers to go oooh and ahhh… Does not make them “Great” that just means they are marketing people 80% and 20% photographers. This stuff on the net is getting so bad its making me want to toss my cookies.

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

I’m really not sure where you are coming from or what the point of your comment is.

While usually I like to “joke off” these types of comments… you are thankfully not hiding behind anonymity so knowing that you should be seeing these replies gives me a little more incentive to write back and actually address what you wrote.

First of all I’d like to know what you consider to be a professional photographer… and what the difference between a professional and a “self proclaimed” photographer is?

We photograph people for a living. That is our business and our job… and is how we make our entire income. What else must someone do to be considered a “professional” by you?

Also, I have no idea what you mean by self-made website. Our site is a blog… we purchased a theme for WordPress, did some customizations… and now post our content to it ourselves. Please clarify what you are even talking about.

I’d love to also hear what the heavy “effects” are that we used on the above photos. Do you consider a black and white conversion a heavy effect? Because that’s the only thing close to an effect that was used. The rest is all skin retouching, color and contrast correction and some dodge/burn. There is also one photo where we bumped the highlights and shadows and recovery because we like how it looks.

Honestly reading your comment again… not one thing you said makes any sense to me. “Talking up” our images? Rubbing noses with a few names? What are you even talking about?

If you are so upset with what you’re finding on the net why are you even visiting any of our sites? If something makes me want to “toss my cookies” I typically avoid it.

This seems to me to be another case of a “veteran” photographer who is upset because younger people with less years under their belt are getting work and clients and are making an impression on people. If that’s not the case then please explain what this is all about and why you even chose to spend the time visiting our site, looking at our photos… reading ALL the comments… and leaving some really negative comments of your own. I’d love to hear it.

      Hi Viscara!

Wow, I am amazed that you are not anonymous with this comment!!! Good job. Seriously, good job on not being an anonymous douchebag.

Ok, now on to your comment…

Your opinion on our lighting is noted, and after looking at your work I don’t see much difference between your work and all the other stuff from strobist followers, so good job on being one of the standard crowd (don’t stand out by moving light around to new places)!

I’m not sure what you are trying to say about our ‘self made website’… is it not user friendly? Is it hard to navigate? Is it not google friendly?

About our ‘effects’ and ‘filters’ on these photos… NONE. Yep… all just regular editing in photoshop and lightroom. You must not have learned much in your photography experience about editing, don’t worry you learn in time.

I don’t consider posting a few images to our website ‘talking them up’ like you say, we just posed the images and others enjoy them.

I like what you said about being 80% marketing and 20% photographer (I think we are more 40% marketers, 20% video maker s, 20% photographers and 20% lazy)… you know these days if you are just a photographer and not a marketer you end up just going on forums and blogs to complain about how other peoples works sucks. Comments like the one you made are often also made by these photographers… I think it is just lame that those photographers don’t try marketing themselves… it is sad.

P.S. I am not “Pete” as I now have read I was not the only one with this opinion about the work above. Although I will not agree with Pete that the light was good? Shhh.. You were right in that effect he was a amateur to come up that opinion about the lighting. I have all my info included in my above post. I can be verified who I am and feel free to see for yourself I am not hiding my identity. I am a different individual than that poster above. I came through here and found this page via a email I had got from Kiss album makers. What I see here is a kid that has the time to produce a lot of hype on a self made or proclaimed website to boost his image instead of “Boosting” his lighting skills.. Sorry but I have to put you in your place. Just because you “Call” yourself a pro does not make you one…. Just as you are making fun of the guy pete above by calling him a amateur you are not far off from him yourself from the images I see above. And you sound pretty “Arrogant” about your self here on these statements above for someone that has been shooting for maybe 3 or 4 years tops.. You are in no position showing the quality of work like that above and mocking some other amateurs work. Get over yourself.. The mockery of how you responded to the individual above is in par with the work you are doing. Like I a said I am a for real individual not hiding my identity and unlike yourself I dont self proclaim myself a “Pro” I am actually one. I been at it full time living for 17 years as a commercial photographer with a studio.

      Oooh another one!!!

Just to let you know we are not ‘a kid’ we are The Bui Brothers, Lan Bui and Vu Bui… you can see more on our About page.

Also, we don’t have a lot of time to hype our stuff, if we did we would be posting more of our new work… I actually really want to post new stuff but we are busy working on new photo shoots (you know, because we are actually working photographers).

You said “Sorry but I have to put you in your place.” Don’t worry, no apology needed, you have not put me in my place…

Please define what make a photographer a pro… we make our living from doing photography and video work… what do you consider a pro?

Although yes, you used your info and linked to your website above… we actually STILL have no idea who you are. I see from posts on other websites you’ve made (all negative, by the way… interesting how you like to log on and just be angry at everyone) that your name is Rafael Viscara… but still haven’t seen a photo of you or any other personal identifying information.

You complain about our website but yours leaves no room whatsoever for comments or interactivity. Is this because if you DID allow others to comment on your work you’d be constantly bombarded with return negativity for all that you spread around other peoples’ sites and work?

You say that what you see here “is a kid that has the time to produce a lot of hype on a self made or proclaimed website to boost his image…” Wow, that’s a mouthful! If you clicked our about page or even watched the above video or pretty much read ANYTHING about us you’d know that we are two brothers… and we’re really not young enough, unfortunately, to be called kids anymore. Your terminology, however, only strengthens my belief that you have been in the business for a while and are angry that a bunch of “kids” are coming into your industry and doing work that you don’t get to do.

You AGAIN say that we call ourselves professionals though we aren’t. Again I’d like to know what you consider to be a pro? How many years of experience does one need? Since you say we’ve probably been in the business for 3 or 4 years (actually we only quit our day jobs 2.5 years ago) I’m guessing you think that it’s more than that. To me even someone who takes images that I think are terrible and have no artistry or technical skill behind them is still a pro if that’s what they do for a living. Enlighten me on your opinion, though.

We mocked Pete because he attacked us with no basis, just pure insults… and was trying to be anonymous. It’s annoying and I have no sympathy for people who run around insulting others while their own work is terrible, but hide behind the anonymous internet so no one can see the quality of their work.

You refer to your 17 years of experience… you call our website self made… you call us amateurs… you say you are a pro… and you trash our work. I’d love to open up discussion about your work. You don’t allow it on your site… because it’s a static website with no interactivity and photographs from what appears to be just a few photo shoots. How are you considering yourself a pro? Your negative comments that you’re spreading around don’t seem very professional to me.

Please give me more details on what you consider to SUCK about our photos. What’s the problem with the lighting? The shadows? There are no effects so I still have no idea what you’re talking about there. I don’t believe that we are the best photographers out there… I am constantly in awe of other photographers’ work and aspire to be better and better in time. I learn as much as I can and I share everything I learn with anyone who listens.

Our entire business and lives are on the internet… for all to see and comment on. We hide behind nothing. You claim that we “hype” ourselves and “boost” ourselves and call ourselves pro… can you point me to ONE place we have done these things?

Show who you really are and lets have a decent conversation about this. I doubt that you really can… but I’m open to the opportunity. You seem bitter… and that fuels your hatred of anyone else who appears successful. This is my opinion… but since you shared yours I feel justified in sharing back.

Your comment on putting us in our place is laughable. No, really, it made me laugh. Actually I laughed multiple times while reading your comments with Lan. Think about that before you type your next response. Make some sense instead of just blathering on about professionals and lighting in vague references and no solid points. If your goal was to make us feel bad about ourselves… you have failed miserably. If you were intending to inspire us to keep posting because the truth is that if you aren’t being criticized you aren’t doing well… then congratulations. It’s genuinely fun to respond to comments like yours… and although I pity you and your bitterness towards other photographers… I welcome the entertainment.

Lastly I’ll address your statement about us being arrogant. I think that defending ourselves on our own blog against negative comments about our work and livelihood is a hell of a lot less arrogant than visiting other peoples’ sites… where they open their work and life up to inspection and criticism… and making heartless and pointless terrible remarks.

      Or maybe I’m just wrong?

Yes… Another one….. I love that you post “Ohhh another one” As if thats your salvation to creditability your work or argument in defense. You will have to come up with a better answer than that. For a couple of “Kids” yes kids.. Your pretty arrogant.. As I stated above your work above is by far from “Pro” work.. Any actual “Working” pro would easily see this in the work above. Its very clear by those photos you guy have no concept of lighting or how it works nor how to apply it. Funny how you mention that you dont have time to “Hype” your stuff when anyone with half a brain can see that 90% of your site here is “Hype” and self promotion illusions and 10% photography.. You can disagree all you want on this but if you do your only seriously fooling yourself….. Take that last sentence as some sound advice here as your making yourself look really stupid in saying that this is not true it only undermines your creditbility to say otherwise.

2nd I love the comment “You know we are actually workng photographers” to the effect that is why you dont have all this “Great” work not posted on your site. That is almost a laughable answer as you look pretty stupid saying that. Considering you have all the time in the world to post “meaningless” funny comedy videos that are such a shell of any content with substance. You have all the time in the world to post tons of videos and post blogs and answer comments not just in this thread but all over your site yet can not find the time to post photos of your best work??? “Righhhhht……” The reason is because this “IS” your best work…. That was the silliest answer I have ever heard a photographer give for poor images….. “I dont have time to post them on the site yet have time to make a ton of videos and post those and I am to busy also because I am out shooting more bad images” I am coming down hard on you guys because its guys like yourself that really give real photographers a bad name. You guys entire image looks like one bad infommercial…. Much like the little Vietnamese guy did standing in front of sports cars and a yacht he “Rented” between paid bikini clad models yelling “I can make jeew a llllooot of mooooney” Believe me no one is “Buying it” at least no one other maybe a couple of starry eyed young kid beginning photographers that dont know any better yet or perhaps some young bimbo girl “Which there is plenty out there” that will buy into your hype.

My definition of a pro is someone that works “FULL TIME” making his “Entire” living from shooting and does not have to use poor infommercial tactics to try to compensate for their poor photographic skills. One that their photographic skills photographic images speak for themselves and stand on their own “Merit” from what I see here the clearly dont. Thats my definition of a Pro….

So come up with something better the typical kid answer of “Oh your just jealous” answer… Instead prove it by showing quality work not “Fluff” and smoke and mirrors. Remember the proof is in the work… Not in what you “Say about yourselves” anyone can do that…… That all day long… and before you delete this comment or posts they have been already saved and will enjoy showing them with other actual pro shooters on my site so we call can have a good chuckle while we take next months camping trip..

You must re-read my comment, I did not imply that we are hiding our good work… actually this photoshoot still stands as some of our best work.

Ok, and to be clear so your small brain can understand… we are full time in this business… our work speaks for itself… we have no infomercials… so by your definition we are pros. I can say it simpler if you still don’t understand.

Oh and the only way you can get us to prove anything to you is by becoming one of our clients… but I don’t think you can afford us.

Lastly, until you make a good valid point or criticism you will not get any more responses from me. I’ll just sit here and laugh at how you are making an ass out of yourself. It was fun so far!

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Again you refer to professionals in a rather silly way. You even say “working” pro this time. Um… we make our entire living from our photography and video work. Is that working pro enough for you?

Lan said NOTHING about our work on the site being not good because we don’t have time to post our “good stuff”. Way to misunderstand, buddy. He said we’d have a lot MORE work posted, thus being more MARKETING (using your words) if we had more time. Blogging takes a lot of time for us. We have to edit the video that we make which both highlights the client and gives some of our viewers some insight into how we shoot. People like them, and we like making them. It’s because of this that we don’t post more regularly.

The thing is… we LOVE this shoot. We had a great time with Justine and we were proud of the photos when we posted them.

I don’t know if I should even address your racist comments above. That’s taking this conversation to another level.

Hahaha I do love your threat about saving this conversation. We won’t delete your comments unless you start insulting our clients (which you came VERY close to with your “young bimbo” remark which I am almost inclined to believe you said towards our clients) or start cursing or making other remarks that we don’t allow on our site. We don’t hide behind anything, definitely not censorship.

Why don’t you open up your images for comment… or should we take this conversation to your flickr stream?

      http://www.flickr.com/photos/13064082@N00/

You STILL haven’t answered ANY of our questions except that you defined what a pro is to you. Um… sorry to tell you but we happen to fit that description perfectly.

Now I’ll say this. If you don’t actually make a point or address the questions I’ve asked… then you’re just trolling and not trying to be constructive at all with your comments… and we’ll start ignoring you. If you want this to continue… then make it a conversation. I addressed everything you’ve said in all of your comments… now respond to mine… or do you just enjoy going around and insulting people with now purpose?

I’d like to make myself clear, because you don’t seem to understand this point… we like our photography, and our clients like it. That’s what’s important to us. I sure as hell didn’t do it to please the likes of you, buddy!

If one searches google for your business name… one can see that all you do is click around and leave negative comments while linking back to your own website and saying that your work is better… and you say WE do shameless promotion? I have yet to find one constructive or intelligent post by you ANYWHERE on the internet. It’s all just bitterness and negativity. If I’m wrong… please enlighten me.

Oh… and one last thing… YES we take the time to respond to all our commenters! We actually care about this community… we share information and knowledge and value every person who comes by and checks out our work and takes the time to comment. That even includes you. I may not respect you or even like you… you’re a bit too petty for my tastes… but I value the fact that you created a little entertainment in my life for the night. For that I even thank you.

Enjoy your camping with your other pro shooter friends. I’m sure you guys will have a wonderful time stewing in your own bitterness and hatred towards a new generation of photographers that are “stealing” your clients.

I totally dig your images guys.

First off, I want to say, yes….there are “rules” they teach us in school about lighting, composition, etc…. BUT, as most creatives know…rules are meant to be broken. And what works for one person, doesn’t always work for another. Thats what makes some people stand out from others…. THEIR EYE

I LOVE that we are not all the same. Wouldn’t the world be a boring place if we all dressed the same, photographed in the same way and style? Sometimes it’s what we do that’s different that makes us all so unique. Why do we want to be like everyone else?

If you guys want to change your lighting, have fun with your models, and enjoy your work…then by all means…DO IT! And if other people are going to hate on you because you don’t do things the “RIGHT” way…then that’s just sad.

I don’t claim to be an expert by any means. I am like you in the sense that this is my profession. This is what I do for a living. I trained for this. I don’t have another job…this is it. People like me for me. People like you for you. And I like you for being true to yourself…so keep on doing what you do and don’t let the haters get you down. That just means people are watching….

    Be unique…be you ;)

If we don’t continue to push ourselves we have plenty of time to trash others work. You did little more than what used to be done in a pro darkroom so these guys are off their rocker. As chase jarvis mentions, vision is more important than perfection… keep moving your vision. On a side note. Nick onken just blogged about how in todays world, its 80% marketing and 20% photography if you want to make a living as a photographer. Love the cinematic feel of some of the images.

    See you guys in vegas!

Dude, great quote… it’s so true. Without marketing we would be out of work… our marketing is pretty much contained to this blog but it gets our work in front of a lot of eyes and it helps us tremendously.

Thanks about the cinematic feel… we were DEFINITELY going for that in the black and white ones.

Viscara, on your wedding album pages, images 13 and 14 have a big old sensor spot on the left side. You might wanna clean that up a bit since you’re wanting people to know you’re a pro.

oh, and on your site, where you post the ‘site best viewed @ 1026×768′ — most people use 1024×768, why’d you add the 2 extra pixels? Oh, that’s probably a typo.

Anyway, you do have some beautiful images on your site. I can see that you know what you’re doing. But, you also should expand your horizons. I’ve met the Bui Brothers and they are doing some fabulous work. So, you don’t like it, their customers sure do! And they’re the ones who count.

I never said I don’t like the photos because they lighting is not by the rules or was hard nosed ruled person about “lighting Ratios” or written rules of how light should or should not be. If you guys knew anything about my work or what I do you would not even had made that defense above.. I could care less if the rules or lighting were applied or not applied. Bending the rules is fine if it “Works” but they don’t work at all above. The point I made was these guys are completely arrogant and should never be pointing fingers at any other photographers like the guy above that made the comment about them “I never saw his work”. As these guys themselves are not more than a couple amateurs themselves and the work above shows it period… If the broke the rules on lighting or not still does not change that the above images are terrible lighting…. They are extremely unflattering as well as it shows clearly that those guys dont know anything about how “Light Works” Hence the Amateur title I give them. They have no business pointing out others work when they themselves are no “Herb Ritts” and have not mastered lighting themselves. Even with the Rules or no Rules of lighting theory spoken about above. The are talking from a pretty high horse that has no saddle on it… I love how no one speaks about the 90% hype and 10% photography as well as the “Not posting my best images because I am too busy working… ” LoL Were are the comebacks for that.. The reason is their is no argument for “Poor Work”. Like I said good work stands on its own 2 solid feet without the need for all the “Buzz” and big marketing Image and videos and flashy stuff.. Like I said all it does for these guys is make them look like a “Screaming poor infommercial” and any one with half a brain can see that…. The only ones wanting to defend this would be a couple of “and I feel bad for them” naive beginner photographers that dont know any better yet… and are defending it because they paid to see one of these guys seminars or were trying to learn from these 2 guys but in short time even those individuals will wise up after they been around a while and learn a bit more about the business. If you are one of those people please please save yourself the trouble dont get caught up in the “Buzz” “Marketing” “image” crap… Yes that stuff helps your sales or business to a degree but only when you have mastered your photographic skills first and established all of the other things that are important in being a photographer. Without those things you will just be fooling people and yourself. The proof is in the images then you can use a 10% percent “Hype” and 90% photography. Why because it wont take much to sell your work it will sell itself… I been around long enough to see guys like these two come and go all the time..

I know all you new photographers all get excited and want to be cool and be thought of as a cool photographer and all but believe me work on your skills not on reading camera brochures or what latest camera to buy, silly gimmicky stuff. There is no substitute for good work and good images.

Dan I did not see your post above until I posted the one above as you must of posted as I was writing mine. Nick may have blogged about 80% and 20% but just because some “Self proclaimed” blogger wrote about something does not make it actually “True” nor “Right” …..

Do we actually live in a world these days were people are really that dumb to believe something just because it was “Blogged” or written by some marketing guy.. ??? If thats the case I have a bridge to sell you guys…

Dan my images are being replaced on my site and the site is under construction I had two different guys working on it and they apparently did not know what the right or left had were doing. The images are being fixed on a couple shots as I am not a web guy or blogger nor web designer never claimed to be I am a Pro “Photographer” thats what I do not a web marketing guy out of college pretending to be a photographer. But all of this is besides the point the point was these guys had no business mocking the “Pete” guy or who ever he was about his “Amateur” work “I never saw the guys work” as these 2 guys are not a any better themselves on the skill levels as photographers. The way they were speaking about the comment was pretty “arrogant” and they looked pretty stupid making the comments that they did above. Its sort of the kettle calling the pot black. They are far from that level of skills to be talking like that and even if they were they would not have to speak that way their work would stand on its own which it clearly does not…

    Hey…Viscara…

I just found the Bui Brothers 2 days ago…amazing by the way guys love the style…

The excuse you just gave of not having a website up is an excuse used to dodge the bullet the Bui brothers shoot…

The reason you don’t have a website is that more than likely you’ve never had one nor will you…

Because as pointed out already…all you like to do is bash others work…

Let me spell something out for you…it’s called creative license…their style is theirs…people who dig them will use them…if they don’t they won’t

Bui’s keep up the good work!

Hi Geoff… thanks so much for your kind words about our work. I’m glad you found us! (and not only because you like our stuff hahaha)

Yeah, some people totally don’t understand that not everyone is going to like what they like… and some people really feel entitled in every action of their own… no matter what it does to someone else.

    Hey…Viscara…

I just found the Bui Brothers 2 days ago…amazing by the way guys love the style…

Wow. Why the negativity? I get that photography can be extremely subjective, and no – not every photographer shoots the same style. While their work may not be your cup o’ tea…. why bother to sound off on their blog? It sounds bitter and vindictive, and only makes yourself sound more unprofessional.

Your critiques are unsolicited. It’s like that age old saying… hmmm… wait, what was that? Oh, yeah. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Bui Brothers – thanks for sharing your work and staying true to who you are as photographers.

The only response I can give is that photographers, graphic artists, musicians, painters are all artists. I just think judging others’ artistic styles and work based on a standard set of rules is bush league. Who really cares what type of lighting was used or not used? If people find what they see to be stimulating to their senses and mind, who cares where the lightbulb was placed? As someone stated earlier, rules are made to be broken when it comes to artistry. It’s all a part of defining each and every one of us as individuals expressing ourselves visually.

To be honest, I don’t really think there’s an official rulebook when it comes to artistic expression. If there is, I’ve never seen one.

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Hi Robert! You’re absolutely right… and people (myself included) need to realize that. Not everyone will like my work and I definitely don’t like everyone else’s. And that’s ok.

Man it’s easy for anonymous cowards like Viscara to attack great work. It somehow makes Viscara feel better about his/her work to crap on someone else’s work.

So Viscara…come out of your mom’s basement and prove who you really are or be branded a coward.

And just so you know, the lighting in the show with iJustine is KICKASS enough that I contacted the Bui Brothers about hiring them.

Stop being a troll and get a life. You make yourself look stupid. Just because you CAN comment doesn’t mean you should.

Nice work Bui Brothers as usual :)

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

      Thanks Scott! :)

Your words, as they often are, are strong and to the point. And, as always, much appreciated.

Too bad Viscara is using all his energy to be negative. Who has time to spread this sort of ick around? I’m too busy with clients to waste my precious time on ridiculous half arsed discussions.

The website excuse is SO LAME. I’ve heard a variation of that on DWF a million times-“Oh, I didn’t know those photos of yours were on my website MY WEB DESIGNER DID IT”
It’s just as bad as my dog ate my homework.

And if there were some actual CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms then at least we could all learn something (or not…artistic license and all!)

Whether we love the Bui Bro’s work or not is completely beside the point-they do, their clients do, and they are growing their own unique style.

Might not be your cup of tea but you don’t have to hire them. End of story. Focus on your own work-your energy will be much better spent there. Your work is definitely good-I can see you’ve worked some miracles on a few weddings! Turn this energy into good stuff for your clients-they’ll thank you for it. (Seriously-I’m not being snide or anything-I really think it’s in our best interest to focus on our clients and what we do best.)

Best wishes to all-may we all grow and learn and come to a place where we enjoy our work and stand by it. :)

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Jennifer, you make an excellent point. Actually you made a few!

Even I should… instead of responding to this troll… use this time to instead be positive in some way or another.

If we all took all the negative energy that we inevitably fling back and forth at each other once in a while and instead focused on being positive and good to each other… well the world would be more than just a better place.

Geoff… Uh before you speak maybe you should be able to know the facts.. When did I say I never had a site? So what is your point makes no sense at all…

Kristen you spoke of negativity yet you didnt mention it about the Bui brothers when they put the “Pete” or who ever that guy was calling him a amateur and mocking him… I see its one set of rules and judgements for one set of people and another for “Fanboys” followers……

The point was you never proved your work any better than the guy you were mocking Vuboi.. As well as the point of no substance and all self promo hype nothing more… You never had much of a point to argue on that one.. Nor will you ever… As well as your brother defending his work by saying its not the best work being shown on the site because he is to busy… LoL.

I never said you go “Around” insulting others. Your words not mine.. I said you were mocking “ONE” guy and one guy only. The guy above which you were mocking for pointing out a obviously correct comment and opinion. As well as you called him a amateur and you a “Pro” which was laughable.. as you have no foundation to be so arrogant in a statement when showing that kind of work…. “Which is fine as you guys are still learning” “Which we all were at one time or another” But to be mocking some guy and labeling him with a “Amateur” insult as if your the old salty pros in this is down right arrogant and laughable let alone unprofessional of you do to so.. As if you were of that level you would not have to answer him because your work would speak for itself and it doesnt and thats why you did what you did. Sorry man but the work you have displayed does not show any level of skill to be looking down on “Any” amateurs work.. Because your not far from that yourselves anyone can see this other than fanboys that have not been around to know better yet..

So please by all means keep posting the videos I will save them for a our campfire when I go hunting next month me and the guys from the Album frames companies will be having a good laugh around the fire being entertained.

By the way PlaneMitch thank you.. I liked your videos that you directed as well. I like McDonalds idea you had.. Yes I guess there was a type on the 1024 or 1026 I will let the guy know to fix it along with the other 10 things that need to be done.. I just hate dealing with it as I get most of my work from referrals and and word of mouth which is the best kind of marketing. As its real and can not be “Bought” people only recommend you because they believe in your work and have experienced it already. So the web thing is always been a “Ehh” thing for me… As so many other busy shooters we tend to give less attention to it “I know bad” but it is what it is..

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Your comments are becoming very boring… but I guess I am partly to blame since I keep responding… it’s just too tempting… even though you’re really becoming tiresome with repetition.

You claim that you insult us because we attacked someone else for being amateur when we are pro. He came to our website and insulted us, while trying to be anonymous. Now you come to OUR blog and insult OUR work… the same thing you claim we did to someone else!

Hahahaha is there no end to your ignorance?

The web thing is so “ehh” to you that you spend hours posting negative comments on other peoples’ blogs?

Jennifer said it very well above… use the energy you have (and it seems as though you have a lot) and focus it on your own work. I’m pretty sure I didn’t out of the blue come to your blog (which you don’t have) and start insulting your work.

If you’d like you could hire us to teach you how to become more effective with your time online. We do one-on-one consulting and would be happy to help you use your time online in a way that will help you… or maybe even others… instead of just spreading your hate and bitterness.

Take a rest and enjoy your weekend… or keep making yourself look ridiculous.

      • http://visccara.com/ viscara

Oh wait hire you for consulting?? Gee I thought you limited your work to Marketer and Buzz word generator and then blogger then webdesigner then photographer in that order already now your consulting company too??? Wow really very interesting… Now I know why your work looks like it does… LoL. This is getting better all the time..

I do have to admit its pretty easy for someone to call someone a “Troll” as you did above on your comments were clients all will see it.. But most likely your not worried as you really dont have paying clients. I could not even begin to imagine posting such name calling were “Real” clients would see them…. This only goes more to prove my point about you guys and all the “Self Hype”

No “Real” professional on any level would make such a post with that kind of name calling for clients to see on their own site..

Pretty easy to say hiding a million miles away behind a keyboard.

I do have to admit I am much like a foreign town in a local bar telling them that heir band sucks “Even not matter how true it is” I will have stones thrown at me by the “Locals”… I would love to post this entire thread and your work for some Commercial shooters to see and give a opinion other than the “Locals” on this site.. It would be a grand eye opener Mr Boi… But please by all means save the name calling to in person as I really doubt you would do it even with your brother in tow.

This is like an episode of Jerry Springer…. and to that end, I don’t even believe the Bui’s are actually brothers… Until I see positive DNA confirmation, how can you claim to be brothers. I have a REAL brother, because he’s been in my family for over 30 years…. How long have the Bui’s been brothers???

I’m seeing a pattern here… lying about being a Pro, AND now you guys are busted on this whole “Brother” thing….. come clean guys, the truth is always best.

Wow, some serious negative energy. I guess somebody has nothing better to do than complain about young up and coming talent like the Bui Brothers. I love these guys and they have created some amazing video work for me which they kindly donated for my charity project http://hogforkids.com/. The video on my site will speak for itself, not many are doing what they are with the new mediums out there, may it be video or photography. I love these guys, some of the kindest and most giving people in the industry.

Truthfully i lost all respect for Rafael Viscara after his racial comment. Very unfortunate he had to go there. Just another grumpy, not sure you guys should waste any more time on him. It has definitely entertained me on a Friday night as i upload images from my HOG for KIDS project i just completed in the Dominican Republic.

Uh Scott….. “Annonoumous” ???? Obviously Scott is clueless… because if he was actually paying attention he would see I never hid who I was.. I posted my name and info and contact stuff on the profile or post.here. Next time before you insert foot in mouth check things out…

For scott: above next time read the “Entire” thread because if you did you would see I already spoke of your argument which off base.. Because I never said anyone that doesnt shoot or “light” by the standard rules makes their work bad… Duh…. Never made that a point… The work was bad in any event “rules or no Lighting rules” its plane bad in any perspective of lighting subjects.

Curt that was pretty funny but I think those guys are brothers just look at them.. You can at least tell that part of their “Hype” is true. I mean they could be cousins or something but they do look like brothers. But thats about all I think is true about there marketing… The rest is just “Fluff”

Jennifer: Hire them????? Boy talk about clueless….. What in the world would I hire them for??? I am sure if you were that very amateur that was being made fun of by these two brothers you would feel the “Negativity” far more than what I was doing above… You just happen not to be that guy the zeroed in on today.. Otherwise you would be saying something different. I could care less about their work… Believe me If I was actually worried about those two guys work I would be in trouble on my own anyways… The thing was weather I like their “Style” as you put it or not was never a point it was the fact that they are in no place to be mocking the amateur guy above or any other amateur out their learning as these two are clearly barely learning photography themselves. So please people dont mock some amateur until your in a place to stand from that would even allow you to do it. But even then you should not do it as when your on that level you wont even have too.. What these 2 guys said above was not right.. Especially on their own blog were their clients can see it? Uhhh Bad…

Got to run folks got to get rid of this cold so I can be ready for my hunting trip… Hope to get a 8 point buck this year.

Please make sure to take some pro pictures of you and your pro photographer friends (support group?) laughing at this blog post. Oh, and by the way, no need to try and prove you have balls by mentioning the buck you need to slaughter. No one here is questioning your manhood. Let’s leave the territorial peeing to the dogs.

Do you take steroids? Maybe you do and you don’t know. Doctors can help with that.

      • http://visccara.com/ viscara

Never said anyone was question my manhood?? Are we reaching for things? Like anyone here even cares if I was a wimp or a macho guy.. Please… If I was a macho guy you guys would hate me more if I was a wimp you guys would pounce on it…. So it would have little difference in me trying to prove what I was… I am actually excited and want to get rid of this cold so I can hang out out with some great friends for our annual get together.

Weak bonny… Way off topic and no substance or point..

Nice that you actually DO know how to spot something “weak” with “no substance or point.” I would like to personally disagree, however, as I thought my comment was quite funny and therefor has at least one “point” which is was purely to be funny.

But, seriously, why are you avoiding the steroids question? That’s a serious problem, especially when you are hunting. You’re type of comments are 80% of the time associated with people on steroids and 20% associated with trolls, which are not fake fairy tale trolls with dirty hair, no, these are real people, they lurk on peoples websites and say dumb stuff that make them sound dumb, and no matter how many people show them the light, they want to continue in their strange and wild ways. You have a chance to break free of this odd behavior. I’m no “pro” but if you’d like, I’m willing to counsel you through this. If the case is steroids, however, you would need to see a doctor.

Umm Viscara I think you’re the clueless one. By looking at your blog I can tell you’re strictly a wanna be. You don’t even put your full name and contact info there, let alone here. You’re hiding. As trolls often do. So I repeat, you’re a simple troll who feels compelled to attack someone else in order to make your work somehow seem more valuable. Your arguments are as week as your photography. You have no place here. I won’t bother to respond again but I felt like someone who’s actually made a living as a photographer needed to come set the record straight.

My name is in my profile contact info is on my site even my phone# hardly what I would say hiding.. “Troll” LoL… Perhaps you better calm down there old guy before you have a stroke at your age its not wise to get so worked up….. I never called you names but you felt so out of options that you resorted to name calling by doing that you spoke volumes about yourself and opinion…

I don’t understand the point of all of this trash talking from viscara. If you don’t like their work, don’t look at it. Nobody likes an elitist jerk who trashes other people work. People like you made me miserable when I was starting my business. Just because someone hasn’t been in business for 20 years doesn’t make them any less skilled or talents, JUST like being in business for 20 years doesn’t necessarily mean your work is amazing or even commendable. Also, part of a being a professional is having at least a smidge of people skills, (otherwise who is going to want to hire you?), and in that area you’re not looking so great. Being professional means marketing yourself, and putting youself out there for clients to find. Based on that, I’d say they’re doing a great job, since only well known professions get crap talking comments like yours.

Also, you seem REALLY angry about how well known and well liked the Bui Brothers are. It’s not because of “hype”, it’s because in addition to being great at what they do, they ARE likable, friendly, humble guys. In fact, they are so approachable, friendly, and good natured, you’re really doing yourself a disservice by picking a pointless fight. No one who has met or talked to these guys is going to agree with anything you say because you are SO off point and shooting in the dark (how’s that for a hunting reference) you’re looking like a giant fool.

Rebecca I would not trash your work.. Now or when you were starting.. I am actually on your side here. What you failed to realize was what these 2 “Self proclaimed” Pro’s did to another amateur much like yourself once was…. And all of what you say is true above in your first paragraph. Sure their is many great photographers that have been shooting for 3 or 4 years and hey I will be the first to say that.. Nothing wrong with it at all I agree with you that you dont need 20 years of shooting to be creditable. Trust me I know those types too… Those stuffy old farts that still have their old 120 film cameras and Photogenic lights and tons of camera’s collecting dust but they been at it for 20 years so they “Automatically” are Pro’s.. Those guys are stagnant dinosaurs. So in all your points above I agree and I am on your side..

You forgot that these 2 guys did exactly what your are making a point of above. Putting down some guy “I dont know the guy at all” above making a “Insult” of calling him a “Amateur” in a derogatory manor and making a claim that they are big shot pros… So perhaps you should call them on that… I mean per your advice “Which I agree” they should not being doing that let alone putting it on their very own site for their clients to see as well as calling people names… I never did that but yet they did…

Once again, I stand by my claim that the Bui’s aren’t actually Brothers.

I make my living as a Full-TIme Brother, and I can spot a fake one when I see it.

This would also explain why I kept calling Vu by his brother’s name when we worked together. BTW “Lan” or whatever your real name is, your work made the bride cry when I showed her the final edit.

pretty good for a fake brother…..

I never should’ve had left over Turkey tonight…. Ughhh

If some guy randomly posted hateful hypocritical comments, I’d defend myself just the way they did. You’re conveniently forgetting they didn’t track some guy down and pick on him like a bully…HE came to their site and was the one being a bully. Of course they are going to counter his comments and defend themselves. You are doing exactly what you’re criticizing them for.

holy cow, this guy must be bored! guess he didnt have a photo shoot. but for real, its all good, people have different styles, so visccara you are more traditionally trained and educated on lighting and all, but modern contemporary photography and photography itself has no limits! It is an art and medium to reflect all of its artists tastes and creativity! just like surrealism is not like cubism, ya know! its ok, so we like harsh creative strobe lighting … whats wrong with that? to each his own, but I will say Visccara, you started this mess with your very harsh comments and negative tone!

Ok, Viscera, you’ve now racially insulted Vietnamese people, insulted older people, insulted women you call “young bimbos”, insulted other new photographers, insulted people with marketing sense and apparently people with blogs.

I can take you throwing insults at Lan or myself. It’s lame and uncreative, but we can take it and dish it back.

But you’ve done a little too much insulting of other people… and your hateful and racist remarks don’t really belong here. I’m shutting you down. No more of your comments on this post will be let through. Others may still comment at will, but yours are done.

There are still lots of places you can continue this discussion… you can call me (949.735.5781) or email me (vu@vubui.com) or comment on something else of mine. But not here, not when you are insulting my clients and blog visitors and some friends.

Or you can do as you suggested and post our images and video and this whole conversation on some pro forum and see where that gets you. I WELCOME that and REALLY hope you do.

For your information… because you seem to have no clue… a “troll” is someone who visits blogs and posts negative comments for the sake of being negative. There is nothing constructive about what a troll has to say, it’s pure spite and hate and attention seeking. Get it? That’s you. I’m surprised that with your attitude you haven’t come across this term before… or maybe you thought everyone who responds to your trolling was just a fan of Lord of the Rings?

Thanks for the entertainment on an otherwise relaxing night… but when you weren’t being entertaining with your lack of intelligence and wit you were just being plain mean to others, and I have lost all patience for you.

WOW! I just can’t believe this Viscara guy is for real?!! I mean, really? The day after Thanksgiving?! So sad that there are lonely people out there in the world looking for some attention and he got it on this site. What a huge waste of time!

It is so simple, if you don’t like someone’s art, don’t look at it!

He must REALLY LOVE your work guys, he spent more time on this site than his own.

Peace & goodwill wishes to all! :)

So if nothing else he brought me closer to people like yourself! :D

Did anyone notice the difference in the spelling of the name? is it viscara or
Visccara Photography like his “website” shows?? Pure phony!

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

Yeah actually after a little research it seems as though he has two websites, one that he uses when he is out insulting people and one that he uses for his clients, maybe? He actually does good work, which makes his tirade all the more sad.

      From what I can tell:

A name he uses: Rafael Viscara
Maybe his real name: Rafael Morales
The website he links to: http://visccara.com/
      His flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/13064082@N00/
      His other website: http://www.rmstudio.com/

I’m not positive and not obsessie enough to verify, but that’s what a super quick search revealed.

I know, I know… I have too much time on my hands… but hey, it’s Thanksgiving weekend, everyone is watching a movie I’ve already seen… and I have nothing better to do while droopy-eyed with Tryptophan.

    Lan & Vu,

I have admired your work over the last few years, and like many “new” photographers out there I feel that you “GET” lighting and are able to play around with it…THERE are no set rules as to what an ARTIST must do to create an image.

I applaud anyone who likes to experiment with light and poses…after all it is in the “experimentation” that we find our style and purpose. It is this type of thing that makes what we do fun for us and fun for our clients. Passion SELLS.

    Art is always subjective.

Like anything in life, there will be those people who get off on being negative…
Don’t fuel their need by lowering your standards & fight with them…they LIKE that…their Egos feed off of that…I am glad you took a stand and banned him from posting any more crappy blathering trash and that you encourage a dialog with you in private…that shows me what great men of character you are.

I believe there are good and bad ways to verbalize Constructive criticism. But NOBODY listens to ANYONE who starts off Attacking them. I know I personally ignore what ever they have to say because there are nicer ways to say to someone that they think they could have done something a little bit better.

I have been a photographer for over 33 years and trust me, I went through the “good ole” boy system where women are a large minority. I “paid” my dues.

There are those who are just jealous of some of the younger pros because Digital has made them understand lighting & computers have enabled them to be on an equal playing field…they have to just WAKE UP and get OVER IT.

This is a NEW era were even kindergartners are using computers…they will be more advanced than we are today…so instead of alienating them we should be embracing them and encouraging them for being assertive and unique!

My Opinion is as great young PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS / FILM MAKERS, Your “Marketability” makes you more versatile and desired by the paying public…. Keep doing what you guys are doing…you inspire me to be better and after all isn’t that what we should be doing? Keep sharing your passion with us and keep being yourselves…

    Blessings,
    Elena

Elena, thanks for your thoughtful and wise comment.

I do agree that I take criticism much more readily when it’s not dished out in an insulting and attacking manner. I’m all for it. This was not an example of any type of constructive criticism. He was not only harsh but hateful… and I shouldn’t have engaged with him nearly as long as I did. Oh well… every once in a while we take a little stand… and sometimes it’s ill-advised.

Our friend just left me an unfortunately very pathetic voicemail, from his tone and demeanor I can tell there is no reasoning with him. He began by insulting me for using Google Voice for my voicemail… saying it’s not a real phone number. His ignorance shines through from that first statement – I gave him my cell number and that’s what he called… but I have my voicemail forward to Google Voice because it transcribes everything for me and I don’t have to listen to voicemails… they come through in email and I can read them at leisure.

Oh well… not everyone can be like the rest of the commenters who visited this blog post tonight. Without people like him… what would bring the rest of us together to discuss? :)

God bless people like Viscara. That was seriously entertaining.

I checked his flickr photos – some of the most overprocessed photos I’ve ever seen. Some decent. None anything I’d be exceptionally proud of. I always love expert opinions coming from mediocre photographers.

Seriously though, I freaking love people like Viscara. LOVE ‘EM! How they think coming here and spending so much time commenting will make them look like they don’t care… it’s just beyond me. I love it!

You’re right about it being entertaining. It’s been the talk of lots of people I know and even people I don’t know all night… I’m sitting here watching Star Trek and still getting comments from him but I’m no longer approving them.

I can take direct insults but he was getting out of line with other people… and that’s not ok.

I agree That we have to love them though… it makes us seem so much more sane! You’re right about the time he spent on this tonight, too!

      Thanks for the comment, Bobby!

Wow, you guys have had a busy day! I would just like to add my two cents to the conversation…

I think the mark of a good photographer and true professional comes from being able to take, what would otherwise be a bland and indifferent photo, to something that inspires with movement and shape, something that evokes curiosity.

All that and a little bit of decency!

The proof’s in the puddin’, on both counts. I rest my case.

    • http://vubui.com/ vubui

I’d like to thank viscara for being so bogus that Steve Garfield took notice and tweeted about it so I could see the link in my twitter stream and come to this page and see the Bui brother’s work above.

Love it. Very dramatic. Wish you guys were in NY. I’d hire you both in a second.

Thanks Eric! I thank Viscera for the same thing! Glad you were able to be exposed to and like our work… even under silly circumstances.

Actually this whole episode brought out a lot of commenters that we’ve never spoken with before, which is a great thing. :)

Hello Bui brothers! I loved this shoot. Not because of the lighting (although I think those b & w shots are fantastic), not because of the model (who is gorgeous) and not because you may or not may be pro’s (some of the most important and historical photos ever made were by non-pros). I like it for the spirit. Your doing what you obviously love and are enjoying it and others do as well. I believe that rules are meant to be broken (always in a good way though by not hurting others) and how can you hurt someone by breaking the ratio rules of lighting? I say fuckin break them! Have fun! Who fuckin cares!? Why would they care? It’s only light. If they’re so much better they should have nothing to worry about:) Right? I say rock on. Forget this guy. Keep having fun. I’ll watch:)

    peace

Hmmm, I’ve been drawn in by the controversy. Usually I move on and ignore work I find mediocre. If everyone ignores it then the purpose is served.
Truth is I don’t care for these photos either and agree that the lighting looks amatuer. But whatever, they’re probably really nice guys who love what they’re doing and will probably get better.

    • http://vubui.com/ Vu Bui

Hi Christina… it’s true… we do love what we do… and our 2 main goals in our business are to keep ourselves and our clients happy.

Luckily our clients have enjoyed our work as much as we enjoy creating it, and that is truly all that matters. People can come by and comment and judge all they want… but I’ve noticed that the people who tend to leave negative comments are also typically photographers with mediocre work of their own. We have yet to be insulted by anyone we respect as photographers, so I consider us quite lucky!

Thanks for checking out our work even if it’s not really your cup of tea.

  • Viscara’s Brother

Wow…I know this is really late in the game, but I wanted to apologize to everyone for my brother’s comments 9 months ago. My brother being the person who aliased as Viscara. I know it seems random, but we’re half siblings, and we had a falling out awhile ago, and started reconnecting. I did some searching online to view his photography, and see how his work has been coming along, but I never expected to find this.

Can’t say I’m too surprised. While he is an amazing photographer, and has been trained by some of the best in the biz, he’s always had a habit of trying to “school” people. Not just in photography but in just about anything. Just trying to appear like he knows it all.

That being said, he really is good at what he does…but you can be right all day long and still be an ass hole. Sorry again for his comments. He’s my brother and I love him, but he was flat out wrong here.
