TWITTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS – PART 1

by Lan Bui on May 7, 2008

UPDATE: The TRACK feature is currently disabled by Twitter. We hope they bring it back soon!!!

(scroll down for iTunes gift card giveaway info)

This long (11 minutes) video was made for our photographer friends who are just now getting into Twitter. It’s the longest video we’ve ever made… and is only part 1 of 2… we’re trying out a different format (longer and more detailed) which seems to be popular these days. Let us know what you think about it

$25 iTunes giftcard giveaway:

We want to know what you want to hear about. Leave a comment here (or even better, a VIDEO comment!) with a suggestion for a future episode (about absolutely anything), and we’ll randomly pick one to receive a $25 iTunes giftcard. Comments must be left between 12:01AM PST on Tuesday, May 11th 2008 and midnight PST on Monday night, May 17th 2008. In order to be entered you must enter your real email address and name when leaving the comment (email addresses are not published). You don’t actually have to suggest something to be entered, all comments will be entered. Especially ones that tell us how great we are. Those get entered twice.

Oh, and unfortunately we’ve been told that there are rules and laws and things that prevent us from allowing international folks to get into this… so it’s US residents only… but we’d still love to hear from you!

  • Great video. Thank you for sharing - love it. Natascha
  • I wish your videos are subtitled or have transcripts as I am profoundly deaf and a photographer too . . . so I just have to look at the pictures or your diagrams, etc to figure out ...a bit (okay, a lot more) extra work just to get what y'all are saying.

There are a lot of deaf photographers out there who would benefit from people who include subtitles or transcripts.

Overall, your work is fabulous! I just found about you today, and spend the day looking at your videos, btw . . .
  • Hi Charlene!

Thanks for letting us know. Whenever possible we do try to include as much description of the video in text, but I'm sure it isn't enough for someone that is deaf.

If you have any questions or want clarification feel free to leave them here in the comments and we will answer them, or email us any time!
  • Awesome info guys!
  • Quotably is now defunct, unfortunately... Ben Tucker's not doing it anymore.
  • Nice tutorial! By the way, we saw you guys at DJ and J*'s seminar - Freedom Tour! Just wanted to say that you guys are awesome ;D

    Best,

    Lawrence
  • Is this Part I thing a hint that there might be a pt II,

    Thanks for the twitter info.
  • Great video! Super helpful and I got a good laugh out of my Tweetcloud. Thanks for putting this together!
  • Hey guys,

Thanks for the video, you guys were on twitter before me and I've been active for over a year. How come we weren't "friends" until now?

FYI, I like http://www.twhirl.org as a twitter client. It's slick.

  • I have a total love/hate relationship with Twitter. All the geeks here in SF love it, but it seems like a giant waste of time.

But you two have convinced me maybe it's something I need to be interested in, and I hate you a little for that. ;)
  • AWESOME hints! Thanks guys!!
  • 1 year you have been on this? Dude, you ARE a geek ;)
Im more of a person to person kind of guy.
  • Tiffany
I love twitter!! tiffanyi twitter name
  • Yeah Bui bros! That tutorial rocked; I had absolutely no clue what to do with twitter besides update people that I was "having a drink", "mowing grass", or "taking a nap".

side note: if you are still looking for a bag maker, let me know. I know of a dang good one right here in the U.S.

    best wishes!
  • This is great. I am such a Twitter noob.
  • Jeff T.
Why can't all videos that teach you something be this fun? That was full of awesome...
  • Thanks for Twitter help. I am one of those who needed help with Twitter.

    [b]ecker rocks!
  • Tim
Love the tracking tip but how do you turn off a word that you are tracking?
  • Hi Tim, just use 'untrack' then the word/phrase you want to stop tracking.
  • Kelly
Thanks for the info! Been wondering what this was all about!
  • Everyone told me I needed to check this out ... I'm glad I did. You guys are so hot right now :).
  • Thanks so much, guys! I just started tweeting recently, and loved some of the tips you gave. Very cool. (And yes, I would absolutely love the iTunes gc. ;)
  • Very cool. Loved your real world examples!
  • Thanks for sharing your mobile number, by the way - has anyone called you yet? ;-)
  • Are you guys sharing the secret world of Twitter with the rest of the photographers out there now? Before you know it, they will all be getting those BLOGSITES too! (Heehee!) I *heart* twitter - I've been on it since 2006; it was how we ended up with the Emergency Wedding last year when the photographer they originally hired no-showed on them. The power of 140 characters - it is great!
  • steph a
Thanks for the info. Looking forward to part 2.
  • What a great video! I've had a twitter account for a month now and never knew most of the stuff you introduced. Brilliant!
  • p.s. I love that you brothers are doing stuff together! I love working with my sister!! (does this mean I get entered twice??)
  • how about the latest social happenings with photographers? Get togethers, dinners, parties.... so photogs can find each other and have fun!!
  • I have to agree with Becca... I'd love a tutorial on using facebook as a marketing tool.

    Thanks!
  • thanks for keeping me on the computer when i should be at the gym! doh!

    how about facebook for photographers?
  • Thanks for making this video, guys! Awesome!
  • Ok. I begrudgingly got a blog and now I loved. I caved and got Facebook. Do I really have to twitter? Do my clients/friends really want to know what I'm doing? Hell. I'm barely interested in what I'm doing if I don't have a camera in my hand. : ) OK. So I'm a little cranky before my coffee this morning.
  • Best Twitter explanation I have heard yet!!! Awesome!
  • Guys,

Thanks for telling me why I have a twitter account! Great educational video. Loved Vu's song.
  • Leslie P
That was awesome, a lot of good information. It makes me want to start twittering.

    Leslie
  • You're right! I signed up a year ago and I didn't know why except it seemed cool but then I didn't know what to do with it. I loved the tips (and the heads up from Becker!) and can't wait for the next one!
  • At what point should I consider shooting a video to boost business?
  • I like this question!
  • I'm enjoying twitter and so are my clients, family & friends. I've been following you two for a while as well!
  • i think i deserve 25 dollars.
  • love the b-school, but Luuuuuuv the Bui school :)
now, can i have 25 songs please? thanks.

    kissing ass gracefully,
    jaden

i'd love know about the video editing software you use + free music/video resources that you use.
  • Twitter is awesome and getting the Photog community into it is GREAT!

    Thanks again for thinking ahead!

    Lisa
  • Yes... you guys rule!
Maybe a video on how to put together a networking meeting (that works for photographers).... I dont know for sure...
    But anyway...great video!

  • Carrie V.
I forgot to ask...what's up with the hammer and bat?! LOL
  • Carrie V.
Love what you guys have done with [b]ecker and jessica's videos. Would love to see more about the tech side like Shaina suggested. Thanks for the twitter education.
  • Thanks for the information. I was considering using Twitter and this was plenty of great stuff.
  • When is Part 2 coming out or am I missing it? Does a pork nuckle come with the gift card Vu? LOL.
  • Orbie! Part 2 hasn't been filmed yet. We're probably going to film it in a week when this little giveaway is over and we draw the winner (we'll probably do it live online).
  • Thanks for this! I'm gonna go sign up right now. I've been wondering what the heck this Twitter thing was. =)
  • Wow very cool information! Thanks guys! I had never even heard of twitter until today, I'm going to have to go look into it :)
  • Where do you find those widgets people have in their blogs?
  • Jacob, the official Twitter widgets (badges) can be found here: http://twitter.com/badges.
  • I always wondered what was so great about Twitter. Thanks for making this, guys!
  • That is very useful info...and I could be 25 songs richer?...and the Batman part cracked me up!
  • Shaina
A future episode about equipment is what I need. Computers, software, cameras, lenses - whatever! All I know I have dug up on other [b]logs or websites, but it's always just a snippet. I wouldn't mind a (no-so-short) video on what you think the most important equipment is to a photographer. Thanks for doing this!!
  • I have to agree with what Becker said on the [b] school on the answer to the question of a photographers most important item of equipment. Your phone. :)
  • Good Stuff guys, Lets Twitter...
  • Awesomeness guys! Nice job. We actually learned some cool stuff, like tracking, which we had never heard about. So thanks for the help. We love love love technology and hope everyone begins embracing it as much as you guys do!

Thanks again!! (Here's hoping we win!)
    C+D
  • am i eligible to win the $25???
  • @becker yup, you are now that you've commented!
